A few words on Knee Arthritis

Knee arthritis is a common and painful complaint that we enjoy treating at TLC. The pain management of knee arthritis can be achieved by using osteopathy, acupuncture exercise and various lifestyle change. We find these are very effective in the treatment of the symptoms of knee arthritis and help people avoid surgery or manage the pain for the few people for which surgery is required. It is also important to know that not all knee arthritis presentations are the same. Its management requires a nuanced approach that is backed by the latest research available.

Osteopathy: Osteopathy is a natural way to treat joint pain, muscle spasms, and other symptoms associated with knee arthritis. It is based on the theory that the body has a natural tendency to heal itself, and that this ability can be enhanced with manual manipulation. It helps improve blood circulation and relaxes muscles near the affected area and other parts of the body that will be compensating, such as the hip and low back.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a method of inserting thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body. Acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve the quality of life in those suffering from arthritis because it improves circulation, reduces inflammation, increases joint mobility, and decreases muscle spasms and pain. In addition, Osteopaths at TLC are well trained in prescribing exercises for knee arthritis that are tailored to you and your level of pain and ability. We also take the time to get to know you and how your knee is impacting your life so that we can suggest helpful lifestyle changes.

We empower our patients to manage their pain as best as they can on their own, but the nature of knee arthritis often leads people toward having ongoing treatment. Normally, this would require once or twice weekly appointments for a short time to get on top of the pain. We then continue to keep on top of the pain through fortnightly or monthly treatment.

When necessary, we are able to refer clients for Xray or ultrasound imaging. And if further investigation is required we have surgical and other specialist colleagues across Hamilton who we can refer you on toward.
